Citing “philosophical differences,” the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) and its executive director of six months have parted ways.

In an announcement, AAJA said the executive director, Ellen Endo, had left the position and that “philosophical differences over AAJA’s vision and direction have led to this mutual decision.” Endo was a longtime television industry executive when she came to AAJA in December.

The association has named Maya Blackmun, who worked at The Oregonian in Portland for more than two decades, as interim executive director. She has been an AAJA member for 22 years, serving in a number of positions, most recently as co-chair of the MediaWatch committee.

“She is smart, thoughtful and passionate about our mission of diversity in journalism and fair and accurate coverage of the Asian-American community,” AAJA National President Sharon Chan said in a statement.

AAJA said it will search for a new executive director of the summer. Endo’s departure comes three weeks before the group’s annual convention in Boston Aug. 12-15.
