It is a Chinese belief that a person’s character is formed before the age of five. Because of this, the Asian American Cultural Center will recognize children who have accomplished outstanding deeds before the age of five by honoring them with the Exceptional Character Award.

The center is seeking nominations for the award by Aug. 31. All children five or under can be nominated and nominees do not have to have any affiliation with the center.

The winner of the award will be recognized Sept. 12 during the center’s Harvest Moon Festival and Anniversary Celebration. The award’s recipient will receive a $500 check to be donated to his or her favorite charity.

This is the second year for the award. Amy Wong Mok, the center’s chief executive officer and director, created the award last year when she learned about Joel Griffin, a four-year-old boy who wanted to help earthquake and tsunami victims in Asia. Griffin, with help from his mother, came up with the idea to sell all of his toys to raise money for children in need.
