Acclaimed Japanese multi-instrumentalist Shugo Tokumaru will showcase his infectious blend of pop, folk and new music at his long-awaited US performance at New York City’s Mercury Lounge on September 23rd, 2008. The show will feature a collaboration between Shugo and very special guests Jon Natchez and Perrin Cloutier of Beirut with Bang on a Can’s Lawson White of So Percussion plus a surprise or two. Click to listen to his single Parachute, where bluegrass-meets The Beatles combining guitars, xylophone-like chimes and Japanese traditional harps. It’s pretty amazing!
With inspirations ranging from Japanese pop to The Beatles, Shugo’s forthcoming release “Exit” (Almost Gold, Sept. 2) features Shugo playing over 50 instruments but was recorded using just a Mac and a few microphones. From whimsical opening track “Parachute” to its melancholy finale “Wedding,” the album proves why Shugo’s found admirers in Animal Collective, Jens Lekman, M.Ward (with whom he has shared stages since) as well as members of Grizzly Bear, Holy Fuck, and The National.
Don’t miss out:
