Oakland group files petition to recall Jean Quan

A group of Oakland residents filed a petition today declaring their intent to recall Mayor Jean Quan, saying she has failed to provide strong leadership for the city, particularly on crime and the development of the former Oakland Army Base.

The petition, filed this morning with the City Clerk’s office, bears 71 signatures and criticizes Quan for “willfully ignoring the city’s most pressing issue: public safety.”

It goes on to say that Quan has offered “no rational solution to mitigate the chaos.”

The petition also criticizes Quan for her stands on development issues.

“After nearly a year in office, she has exhibited no leadership or insight to develop and implement a sustainable solution to our growing unemployment and depressed economic development,” the petition states

City Clerk LaTonda Simmons said that this was the first time anyone had filed an attempt to recall an elected Oakland official in at least nine years.

  • To give context to the viewers on this forum, Quan’s accounting and fiscal oversight as a member on the school board, made her responsible for the bankruptcy of the Oakland Unified School District. As a Councilmember, Quan was a disaster and did not have any tangible and meaningful accomplishments. Quan wasn’t good enough to win the 2010 mayoral election on her own – so she advocated a voting system that allowed her to syphon votes from minority communities (Quan didn’t even win the Asian vote during the election.) As Mayor, she lacks leadership and has been a train-wreck from the start. She governs a large city like the PTA, is arrogant, condescending, and vindictive to those who cross her. Kudos to those brave citizens in Oakland who are taking a stand against Quan. She should resign immediately.
