Tiger Woods sponsors 71 military kids for O.C. summer camp
115 campers, all between the ages of 11 and 13, are taking part in the Summer Academy at the Tiger Woods Learning Center in Orange County, California.
Seventy-one of the campers come from military families, so they are accustomed to frequent moves and the process of making new friends.
Tiger Woods came from a military family. So he and his foundation make it a priority to sponsor military kids at the academy.
Last year, in the camp’s inaugural year, 40 kids came on full scholarship. This year, with increased donations to the foundation, that nearly doubled. The cost per camper: $1,000.
The campers are spending nights at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center, where they’ll swim, zip-line and go in night hikes.
During the day, they’ll go to the Tiger Woods Learning Center in Anaheim, where they’ll focus on a chosen subject – video-game design, robotics or zoology.
They even have the chance to focus on golf – not only to learn the finer points of driving and chipping, but also how to design a golf club and to plan and maintain a golf course.
A trip to Disneyland will also include a course on the physics and designs of the rides.

THIS PROGRAM SOUNDS A BIT SIMILAR TO DON IMUS’S RANCH!!
In 1999, Imus and his wife founded the Imus Ranch, a working 4,000-acre cattle ranch near Ribera, New Mexico, 50 miles (80 km) southeast of Santa Fe, for children with cancer, as well as siblings of SIDS victims. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day each year, the Imus family volunteers their time at the Imus ranch. Imus continues his broadcasts from a studio there, while the rest of his cast broadcast from New York. In 2000, Imus suffered serious injuries after a fall from a horse at his ranch, and broadcast several shows from a hospital.
