Matthew McConaughey on Gus Van Sant’s ‘The Sea of Trees’: ‘It’s one hell of a survival story’

In The Sea of Trees Matthew McConaughey plays Arthur, a man who has lost his way in life and treks into the thick forest at the foot of Mount Fuji looking for existential answers. Sounds right up the philosophical alley of Rust Cohle in True Detective. “They are very different projects and characters yet they are both poetic,” McConaughey tells EW. “I say another title for this film is ‘You’ve got to go through annihilation to get to salvation’. It’s one hell of a survival story.”

Gus Van Sant is directing—currently shooting in rural Massachusetts and then Japan—and it costars Ken Watanabe (above, standing) and Naomi Watts. McConaughey says Gus Van Sant is the right man for the material. “Gus is a wonderful voyeur and a really gentle soul of a man. He’s got the right sensibility for a film like this. He listens and considers any ideas that I throw at him and I undeniably trust the direction he gives me,” he says. “He’s a lot of fun to create with.”

McConaughey also has a prediction for how audiences will react after seeing The Sea of Trees. “Everyone is going to leave the theater and have their own walk and talk through the parking lot to muse about its meanings, what it was about and what it wasn’t, what was real and what was a dream.”

That is exactly how I view Matthew McConaughey. I muse about what the hell he was trying to say, does it mean anything or is it just nothing in a lot of words with a thicker than bearable Texan accent?? Was what I heard real or was it a dream?? I must say I am disappointed that he was given the role in this film. The Sea of Trees was a legend amongst those in the know like myself. Now the whole world knows about it and as such ruins its mystique and its true meaning! McConaughey needs to lose that annoying accent and learn how to enunciate properly so that we can make some form of sense out of his speech. It is like watching John Wayne or Dr. Phil perform Shakespeare for crying out loud! The man is in dire need of a great dialect coach! Use the megabucks from your films to employ one already! He would never make it in the BBC let alone just survive as an actor. 🙁

McConaughey stars in The Sea of Trees

He is the perfect example of another overrated Hollywood actor. He’d be great in a western or as a guy who was born and raised in Texas as he is a guy who was born and raised in Texas. He could read lines such as “We’re gonna smoke those sons of a bitches out of their holes” or “Let’s round up the herd before we head back to the ranch for some grub, man.” To use the “very sophisticated” words (not) of Dr. Phil who hails from the same State of Texas, “Get real man!” That is why Hollywood is failing in comparison to Foreign Film, The BBC, Bollywood, Asian and Independent Films!

Or he can do the voice for the Teacher on “Peanuts”
