Lingzhi – The “Vitamin of the Future”
Even as medical science continues to advance in treating a wide range of diseases, the real challenge still lies in prevention. The recipe of success rests upon knowing how to maintain optimal health before disease even occurs. The empowerment of ones immune system has never held so much importance. Disease prevention has led to extensive research in herbs, since they are naturally sustainable and adaptable for almost all body systems and conditions.
Referred to as “God's Celestial Herb” throughout Asia, Ganoderma Lucidium has been discovered to have over 252 active components which are beneficial and essential to the human body without any known side effects.
Referred to as “God's Celestial Herb” throughout Asia, Ganoderma Lucidium has been discovered to have over 252 active components which are beneficial and essential to the human body without any known side effects. With a history of approximately 5,000 years, this magic polypore mushroom, also referred to as Lingzhi or Reishi, grows wildly on logs and tree stumps throughout the coastal provinces of China. With six different varieties, red is the most commonly used.
Unlike typical green plants which rely solely on photosynthesis to produce their own nutrients, mushrooms acquire nutrients from decaying organic matter or soil. They are “nature's original recyclers”, without them, the earth would be piled high with dead material. By applying this same property to our bodies, instead of the earth, it is easy to see how Lingzhi is prized as an elixir of immortality. Regular consumption of Lingzhi aids in the body's ability to eliminate toxins and waste materials from our systems, therefore, helping us to maintain optimal health. For thousands of years, Chinese Medicinal classics deem it capable of treating diseases and disorders related to compromised immune systems.
The mythical healing powers and rapid growth of interest in this specific medicinal mushroom has led to extensive research. Along with essential elements such as calcium, potassium and magnesium, Lingzhi has several active constituents which are unique to them.
a) Complex Polysaccharides
Essential components of life, polysaccharides are used within the body for the storage of potential useable energy. As the single most active constituent of Lingzhi, polysaccharides are referred to as immune modulators for their ability to regulate the immune system. Medical research has found a direct correlation between the complex polysaccharides structure found in this magic mushroom to their ability to activate and support a strong immune system.
b) Beta-Glucans
Medicinal mushrooms such as Lingzhi contain a mixture of beta-1,3-glucan and beta-1,6-glucan. These particular glucans have been scientifically shown to effectively activate white blood cells known as macrophages and neutrophils. These cells are of much importance to our immune system since they provide the first line of defense against foreign invaders. When macrophages and neutrophils are activated by beta-glucans, they have the ability to recognize and kill tumor cells, remove cellular waste which has resulted from oxidative damage, speed recovery of damaged tissues, as well as further strengthening other components of the immune system. Studies also show that beta-glucan is a highly reliable supplement for those with elevated cholesterol and blood glucose levels.
c) Ganoderan
Specific to Lingzhi, ganoderan is a phytochemical which contains health-protecting and disease-preventing compounds. By definition, phytochemicals are chemicals produced by plants which have health-related effects, however, are not considered as essential nutrients. Referred to by many as the “vitamin of the future”, numerous studies have shown phytochemicals to posses the ability to boost the production of enzymes which block carcinogenic activity and suppress the growth of malignant tumor cells. Ganoderans also improve blood circulation to reduce the chance of heart disease and stroke.
d) Triterpenoid Saponin
Also referred to as “Lingzhi acids”- Ganoderic acid, Lucidenic acid, Ganodermic acid and Lucidone are unique to Lingzhi mushrooms. Research demonstrates the ability of these saponins to inhibit platelet aggregation (blood clot formation), lower blood pressure, decrease high cholesterol and acting as an anti-inflammatory to relieve pain and inflammation of joints.
e) Ling Zhi-8
This molecular protein specific to Lingzhi contains anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine and anti-bacterial properties. Particularly beneficial for patients suffering from asthma or other respiratory difficulties, consumption of Lingzhi shows a healing effect on the lungs. Allergy sufferers, whether it is food or season related, will also find relief with this herb. Since allergies symptoms are a defense mechanism from a weak or compromised immune system, Lingzhi's immune strengthening effects reduces the immune system's – need to overreact to normal substances. In addition, because of its strong immune regulating activities, consumption of Lingzhi also reduces the risk of transplant rejection.
Lingzhi's reputation thus far remains unparalleled by any vitamin, mineral or supplement on the market today. It is the rarest of jewels in nature for its ability to protect on multiple levels – physically, immunologically, mentally and spiritually. Taoist monks consumed Lingzhi regularly to strengthen the memory, sharpen concentration and increase wisdom. Lingzhi's profound life-giving nourishment is noted by all who take it. It is time we began to feed our bodies to prevent disease and to operate at our optimal health, rather than at our minimal potential.

Intresting article. I did come out with a little on the same called it “Mystical remedies of the ancients”
You’d be suprised to know that ganoderma has been used by many cultures , even tribal people in africa. Of course traditional medicine was the first to study and document their findings.
today research is being conducted throught the world , it wasn’t always like that.
In 2004 I spoke at a UN SPONSORED conference on the uses of ganoderma inthe treatment of HIV cases
