We’re getting so big, we’re getting our own mall

A 44,000-square-foot mall which will include a restaurant, video store, gift shop and coffee shop is currently being built in Harrisburg, PA. It will cater mostly to Vietnamese and others of Asian descent.

The mall’s location was attractive because of its proximity to Interstate 83 and the Sycamore Street route to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation driver’s license center in Harrisburg. Owners hope to draw Vietnamese and others of Asian descent from all over the midstate.

An estimated 11,892 people of Asian descent were living in Dauphin and Cumberland counties in 2007, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That figure represented an increase of 126 percent from the 5,265 counted in the 1990 census.

Bureau data indicated that, in 2007, an estimated 15.2 million people in the U.S. — about 5 percent of the population — were Asian or a combination of Asian and other ethnicities.

I wish they had something similar, like an Asian Trader Joe’s, in NYC. A place where you can buy every Asian spice under the sun, Chinatown dumplings, Japanese candy and Vietnamese noodles. Now that would be heaven!
