Kamala Harris is leading Cali DA race

It appears District Attorney Kamala Harris’ lead in the attorney general race is widening among Democrats, mostly thanks to Bay Area voters.

In a David Binder survey conducted April 12-14 with 500 voters likely to participate in the June 2010 Democratic primary, Harris appears to have a 25 percent share of Democratic voters, up from 16 percent in February.

The next closest candidate, according to the poll, is former LA City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo with 9 percent. Chris Kelly, who has been hitting Harris hard with attack ads, went from 9 percent in February to 2 percent in the latest poll. About half of likely voters still remain undecided.

“Harris’ large lead stems from an overwhelming advantage that she maintains in the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area, where she receives 43% of the vote, compared to no more than 6% for any other candidate,” Binder wrote in the summary.

Kamala is South Asian and African American. If she wins, she’ll be the first female and first African-American and first Asian American Attorney General in California history.

In the hotly contested Democratic primary for Attorney General, the campaigns of San Francisco City Attorney Kamala Harris and Chris Kelly are revving up the rhetoric over the issue of privacy.

This morning, Harris campaign manager Brian Brokaw sent a memo to reporters suggesting that the Kelly campaign was stalking Harris at the Democratic convention. Here’s an excerpt from Brokaw’s note:

“Convention-goers gathered at the Democratic Party State Convention in Los Angeles may have noticed a peculiar site as they walked the halls throughout the weekend: a polite, young, bespectacled gentleman with a video camera following District Attorney Kamala Harris everywhere she went, from dawn to dusk (see photo below). No, he was not a videographer hired by our campaign to chronicle the weekend’s events — rather, he was a 22-year-old staffer ordered by Attorney General candidate Chris Kelly to trace Harris’s every move, every word spoken, every enthusiastic supporter she greeted. We would expect nothing less of the Facebook “Chief Privacy Officer” Kelly than a cheap invasion of Harris’s privacy.”

Brokaw also included an article from today’s San Francisco Chronicle http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/04/20/MNM11D01SV.DTL suggesting that privacy issues would be a key issue in this race, given Facebook’s fumbling of its privacy issue during the past year.

Kelly, meanwhile, is distributing this video http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=412633025691 from the convention. He notes that he picked up some key support at the convention, including that of San Diego Democratic Chair Jess Durfee.
