Asus launching Kinect-like motion control for PCs

After weeks of unofficial hacks, the Kinect motion control technology is coming to PCs in a commercial product. But it’s nothing to do with Microsoft.

ASUS, a manufacturer best known for popularizing the low-cost netbook, says it is working on a motion control system named WAVI Xtion. That’s a combination of Wireless Audio & Video Interaction and a brand name for the motion capture system.

That system is produced by Israeli company Prime Sense, which licensed much of the technology at the heart of Kinect. So the ASUS system will be about as close to Kinect as you can get without a lawsuit.

As well as gaming, the idea is that WAVI Xtion will be used for a variety of PC tasks such as web browsing, for example in homes where a PC is hooked up to a large screen TV and a mouse or keyboard isn’t the most convenient input method.

ASUS also says it will be offering tools to allow third-party developers to produce their own software using the motion control. (There’s even talk of it being built into online gaming, which could spell an end to the image of World of Warcraft as a sedentary activity.) Developers will be able to sell the software directly through a central online store.

The system will get its first public demonstration during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas later this week, at which point pricing may be unveiled. The plan is to release the developer tools next month, with the system itself going on sale some time in late spring or early summer.

    Morning/Evening, Admin!

    I’ve a question:

Am I right in assuming that we can use HTML in our posting? I would like to take some photographs for some future articles/posts and include them, and I see pictures on many articles here, but was unclear as to the proper way to insert them. Advise?

Thank you so much. : )

  • It actually depends on what type of content, where on the site, and what your role is. There is a limited set of HTML all users can put in posts and comments, as indicated by the buttons above each textbox. Beyond that, additional permissions or assistance are required. You can contact me directly via private message if you need something in particular, this would be decided on a case-by-case basis.

I’ve a question for you, when you have the time. Is there a faster way to view all previous comments, apart from the sidebar that lists just the past few?

  • Hi yes, just go to the main community page and then go down to either Asiance Magazine Comments or Asiance Recent Activity (whichever you prefer). At the bottom of the box is a link which says “View MyAsiance Activity” or “View Asiance Magazine Comments”. That will take you to the history of each.

  • This site is gaining too many white guys and spammers than Asian male members. Where is the love in the AA community? There are 2-3 other AA sites I go to that have a good ethnic mixture of Asians males and females. Thank you for my comment here.

  • @ Admin That is not entirely true. Unfortunately the most popular article here gets alot of postings by anonomyous Asian guys reacting to that thinking every other Asian American female desires every white men on the planet. On the contrary, only me and a few others do join this site because we have no problems interacting, socializing and attracting other attractive Asian females in real life. I hope you can promote some sense of Asian love and dialogue in the community. I give credit to Marissa Sung postings as she has reflected on it on her writings.
@Nancy. How do you call me that (being a minority in the country) when I can respect interracial love and marriage based on mutual respect and cultural understanding. I don’t respect relationships on pre-concieved sexual fetish stereotypes and exclusion of those of your own race.

  • That’s because Asian guys aren’t pursuing their Asian sistas!
