Shah Rukh Khan: An audience with the King
What makes Shah Rukh Khan such a huge Bollywood star?
In the burgeoning Bollywood film industry, there are stars that are just as handsome as Khan. There are other actors who are taller and more muscular than he is. There are also a few who are just as charismatic and give riveting performances on the screen Yet, save for Bollywood cinema legend Amitabh Bachchan, few can match Khan, in terms of popularity.
I found out first hand what sets Khan apart from other Bollywood stars when he made a surprise appearance last Friday at a press briefing, hours before the Zee Cine Awards 2011 at Marina Bay Sands in which he was slated to perform.
The reason for his popularity is clear, he is simply a genuinely likable guy and a natural born joker.
He has a following that rivals the most popular sports star, movie star, rock star and pop star in this country combined! It is like revisiting the introduction of the Beatles to the United States back in the 1960’s if you can imagine that!
These Bollywood stars are multi-talented. They possess movie star good looks, are excellent dancers, gymnasts, singers and actors. The Bollywood film is a musical and very much like the golden age of Hollywood. The actors of that era like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Ann Miller and Gene Kelly had to know tap/ballet/modern dance and be able to sing and act to perform in a musical. In contrast to the Hollywood of today where a pretty face (or not) pretty much goes a long way. They have much more in common with our current Broadway performers.

To dance in a Bollywood musical with Shah Rukh Kahn! Unfortunately, I cannot sing but I make up for it with my dancing!
Just signed up for Bollywood Dance Classes in NYC! Now I can prepare for my big debut in my upcoming Bollywood film starring Shah Rukh Kahn and me! Yeah right.
I have yet to experience anything like the popularity of Shah Rukh Kahn! His star power is unequalled by anyone I have ever seen to date! I can only imagine the introduction of the Beatles in the U.S. to have been similar but of course, I wasn’t born yet.
The Bollywood costumes and the vibrant colors of both the costumes and the scenery are just exquisite! It is literally a visual feast for the eyes!
