The Golf World Parses Tiger at Torrey Pines

With a first-round, three-under par 69 on Thursday at the Farmers Insurance Open, Tiger Woods kicked off his 2011 golf season with a relatively quiet debut, finishing the day tied for 22nd, five shots off the lead. At this time last year, Woods was a punchline.

After Thursday’s round, he’d settled into his role as a national enigma. Woods showed off a new swing at Torrey Pines, but it was his short game—namely, his putts—that kept him from making a bigger splash in the quasi-comeback tour.

“Woods missed a good half-dozen birdie putts from within 15 feet,” the Journal’s Matthew Futterman reports from San Diego. But fans rooting for Woods shouldn’t fear: he has absolutely dominated this tournament in the past, winning seven titles, and in four of those victories, according to the Associated Press, he trailed by five shots or more in the opening round.

Still, this anticipated debut left plenty of doubt in the minds of those hoping for something less frustrating from the 35-year-old. “Ultimately, this wasn’t the rebirth of the superhero of 2000 as much as it was a continuation of the evolution of 2010,” Robert Lusetich of Fox Sports writes. “A man still in search of his game, still not quite sure of himself.”

Tiger is really having a tough time right now. I have a soft spot for Tiger bc when I was with American Express and he was our spokesperson he was supernice to me! I never forget when a rich and famous person goes out of his way to be nice to an ordinary person like myself! I met him at the PGA Tournaments and I have yet to see a better player exist. I love the game of golf and watching him play is truly a gift.

Also, he and his mom Katilda do so much work for charity with the Tiger Woods Foundation in collaboration with famous rocker Ed Van Halen and others. Sometimes, we have a tendency to forget the good that people do for others.

The Tiger Woods Learning Center is here to get students thinking about the role education plays in their futures. We want to show them how to relate what they learn in school to their future careers. We offer exciting courses that revolve around careers in math, science, technology and language arts. Because there is something for everyone at the TWLC, we hope to show students how their personal interests can develop into an exciting career. And we do all this using the latest technology in a completely wireless environment.

But we couldn’t do it alone. The TWLC is supported by talented and dedicated staff, volunteers and Board of Directors. Each person is committed to getting involved in their community and investing in the lives of students. They bring knowledge and experience in the educational field and beyond. Tiger Jam uses music to raise money for underserved kids
Tiger Woods has always loved music. From rock and roll to hip-hop, jazz and soul, he has appreciated the artists who produce such wonderful sounds.

In 1998, Woods found a way to incorporate music into his life and raise money for underserved kids by creating Tiger Jam. For 12 years, he has hosted a concert featuring Grammy Award-winning musicians like Sting, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Bon Jovi, The Eagles, Celine Dion, John Mellencamp, Christina Aguilera, Seal, Van Halen and No Doubt. The sold-out concerts have raised more than $12 million for the Tiger Woods Foundation and youth-driven charities.

I love love love Eddie Van Halen!! So here is a clip of Eddie playing for the Tiger Woods Foundation. Great guy! Here is a bit of trivia: Both Tiger and Eddie had been reared by awesome Asian moms! Tiger by Katilda and Eddie and his brother/fellow band member Alex by the late Eugenia Van Halen.
