Singapore Hockey Federation aims for 2020 Olympics
The Singapore Hockey Federation is aiming to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games. It is rolling out a 10 year plan that includes sending players overseas training and getting a new coach.
Singapore’s young players have displayed their potential during the Hockey Junior World Cup and Youth Olympic Games which were staged in Singapore over the past two years. Yet, there is still a wide gap between the Singapore boys and the top teams. To bridge that gulf, the federation is looking at sending some of these young athletes on long term overseas training.
Dr Kong Chee Seng, Vice-President, Singapore Hockey Federation, said: “Someone going to Australia at 18 years old will do their foundation year and then come back for National Service. During all these three years, they will still be playing for the national team in important events.
“Following that, they will be going to university in Australia so that will take another three or four years, so that span is really for each individual is a minimum of six years.” The Federation has applied for scholarships of $20,000 each for two players from the Singapore Olympic Foundation.
Sooner than later, every IT GIRL will be saying “I’m seeing a hockey player from Singapore.” You just wait and see!
Check out these guys and get them while they are “a diamond in the rough”.
