Far Eastern Inspiration at Fashion Week

For years, the tag on the inside of various garments has read “Made in China,” but this season at Fashion Week many designers, and even a smattering of socialites, have been looking to Asia for inspiration.

At Pamella Roland, who launched in 2002, the designer closed out her 2011 show with a crimson silk faille hand-painted chrysanthemum coat. The entire collection was inspired by a recent trip to China, and eastern themes permeated the space including the backdrop, which showed the Shanghai skyline and bonsai in a clouded sky. “There’s been a tradition there for decades, temples, and now there’s a new architecture, buildings popping up everywhere,” said Pamella DeVos, president and designer of Pamella Roland.

Presenting his women’s wear line, Ralph Lauren also tapped into China, the country with the world’s fast-growing market for luxury goods. Black, crimson red and emerald green were the most prominent colors throughout the collection. It’s not just the styles that are channeling the eastern world, however.
