Breaking Heads to Breaking Hearts
The opening film at Hong Kong International Film Festival teams local A-listers director Johnnie To and star Daniel Wu. But while Mr. To is best known for his cop flicks and Mr. Wu is known for dramatic roles, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” is a romantic comedy. The movie kicks off the festival, which begins Sunday and runs through April 5.

“I try to avoid [romantic comedies] as much as possible,” said American-born Mr. Wu in a recent interview in Hong Kong. “Johnnie called me back in May [2010] and I thought he was going to talk to me about a cop movie…. But I’ve always wanted to work with him. I’ve worked with all the big directors in Hong Kong except for him and Wong Kar-wai, and now I can tick Johnnie off my list.”
Mr. Wu has appeared in several gang drams including the 2007 drama “Blood Brothers” set in 1930’s Shanghai and the Jackie Chan film “Shinjuku Incident” in 2009. In contrast to both those movies, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” centers on a love triangle between Yen – an office girl in China played by Gao Yuanyuan — who has to choose between a reformed playboy (Louis Koo) and an architect (Mr. Wu).

The Shinjuku Incident is very interesting bc it is about how in a single decade over 200,000 refugees left China to flee to Japan. How ironic. One never knows what the future will bring.
In other words, “Be nice to people on your way up because you might meet them on your way down.”
Or, “Be careful how you treat people on your way up, because you might meet them again in the future!” I think you all know who you are.
