Hong Kong Bankers, Young Yuto, Rock for Japan

If you thought the hottest music event of the week in Hong Kong was Bob Dylan, think again. A motley crew of Hong Kong financiers and kimono-clad members of Hong Kong’s Japanese community rocked to an 11-year-old Japanese guitar prodigy to raise US$300,000 for Japan’s earthquake relief efforts Thursday night at the Four Seasons hotel.

Steve Bernstein, chief executive of Oppenheimer Investments Asia Ltd., and Jim Olsson, director of prime services at Barclays Capital in Hong Kong, organized the rock concert, which featured local bands and visiting ones from the U.S. The 520 seats went for 1,000 Hong Kong dollars (about US$129) a pop, with corporate sponsors from Piper Jaffray to Morgan Stanley taking tables, said Mr. Bernstein. The event was sold out within two weeks of the announcement.

More money was raised through an auction of goodies ranging from hotel getaways to a 100 trillion Zimbabwe dollar note — and when it was over an anonymous hedge-fund donor matched the sum taken in from ticket sales and the auction to bring the total donation to the Japan Society’s Earthquake Relief Fund to $300,000.
