Webcam Death Suspect Appears in Court

A man charged in the death of a Chinese university student whose struggle with her assailant was seen on a webcam has been remanded in custody until the next hearing May 24. Brian Dickson, 29, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Qian Liu, a 23-year-old York University student from China. He made a brief court appearance Tuesday via video.

Liu was found dead in her apartment April 15, just a few hours after her boyfriend in China watched via webcam as she tried to fend off an attacker who appeared at her door. An autopsy has failed to reveal how Liu died and police say it may be weeks before the results of toxicology tests are known. Police have refused to release any details about the crime or its possible motive.

Dickson has not yet entered a plea, but his lawyer says he will be plead not guilty. Liu’s parents arrived from China last week and attended court on Tuesday before meeting with prosecutors. They declined to comment as they left.

This crime is so incredibly vile, especially because her boyfriend in China watched it via webcam. It brings to mind the movie “Eye for an Eye” starring Sally Field where the mother witnesses her daughter being raped and killed via cell phone while stuck in traffic desperately trying to get to her unsuccessfully.
