Korean Art Show wrapped up its third New York edition on Sunday,

Korean Art Show wrapped up its third New York edition on Sunday, March 11 with over 10,000 visitors during the 5-day event.

Opening day was packed with collectors, government officials and art enthusiasts who came to support the fair and its agenda of promoting Korean contemporary art in the West. Over 2,000 people visited the fair during the Vernissage party and guests sipped on beverages provided by Cavoda Vodka and was treated to a classical music performance led by renowned musician Taeguk Mun on cello. “With the generous support from Galleries Association of Korea, we were able to present a world-class exhibition during Armory Week. We hope to expand our next edition and look forward to introducing more Korean galleries and artists to our NY audience next year,” said Ken Kim, Director of Korean Art Show.

A New York-based collector who attended the Vernissage commented on the “high-quality works presented at the fair” and was “pleased by the diversity of the works shown – which is not usually the case with new fairs.” A crowd favorite were the new media works by Lee, Lee-Nam at Nine Gallery. The Kumgang Mountains is a 7 minute video showing a recreated classical landscape from 1734 that slowly transforms into a modern warfare scene to show the discord between old and the new. Director of Nine Gallery, Yang, Seung-Chan commented that all 6 editions are sold with only 2 APs left.

Chairperson of the Organizing Committee from the Galleries Association of Korea, Ms. Mi Sun Pyo, was in attendance and also participated as an exhibitor. Her gallery PYO Gallery, with branches in Seoul and Los Angeles, showed works by Lee, U-Fan, Kim, Jong-Hak, Lee, Kang-So, and Kim, Tschang-Yeul.

Highlights from the fair also included the special exhibition K-Artists in New York, which featured 7 Korean artists who have made an impact in New York’s contemporary art scene in the past decade. The exhibition provided a survey of the current practices seen in Korean contemporary art and allows us to contextualize Korean art within a larger global setting during Armory Week.

Korean Art Show is the only exhibition in the West that puts a spotlight on the current trends from Korea and gives recognition to some of the most important artists working and living in Korea at this time. In addition, Korean Art Show in New York gives the international audience a preview of its parent fair, Korea International Art Fair (KIAF), held annually in September. Since its conception 11 years ago, KIAF has been heralded as one of the most important contemporary art fairs in Asia with over 190 international galleries at each edition.
