Since its creation in 2002, the annual film festival has grown to become the South’s largest showcase of Asian and Asian American cinema. Over the past 10 years, the festival has provided opportunities for nearly 500 Asian and Asian American filmmakers and documentarians to share their vision, often providing the only venue for their films to be shown in Dallas. The films have also allowed festival goers a chance to experience other lives and cultures without leaving their seats. The Asian Film Festival of Dallas is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating and supporting emerging and established Asian and Asian-American filmmakers and sharing the rich diversity of Asian culture through the medium of cinema.
The week-long film festival will be held at Landmark’s Magnolia Theater in the West Village where thousands of fans will enjoy more than 50 films, attend receptions, Q&A sessions, premieres, parties and meet many filmmakers. Early bird specials for AFFD VIP passes are currently available online at $129 ($109 for AFFD members) instead of the usual $159. A VIP pass grants full access to all screenings (front-of-the-line access), events and parties.
This year’s film festival brings more excitement through the launch of the AFFD’s first student short film competition, the showcase of a greater number of First Feature directing debuts in the narrative and documentary feature competitions, and a trio of special repertory films that includes two anniversaries of classic Japanese films.
Other festival highlights include AFFD welcoming exclusive hotel sponsor The Stoneleigh Hotel & Spa. The historical hotel will be the luxurious home for the visiting filmmakers and will host several parties throughout the week, including the opening night party on Thursday, July 12, 2012. More details will be announced as we get closer to the festival.
