In keeping with their mission to encourage fans to “See Why It’s Different Out Here,” the LPGA tour is going where no tour has gone before.

Starting today in the pro-am of the Wegmans LPGA Championship and throughout the second major of the season, scores of players will use their caddies as social media billboards.

Sensing that Twitter provides a growing and direct pathway for fans to connect and engage with LPGA players, the caddie bibs will feature players’ last names and their Twitter handle.

There are 119 LPGA players on Twitter, including 93 in this week’s field, including Michelle Wie (@themichellewie), Yani Tseng (@YaniTseng), Jiyai Shin (@sjy1470), Christina Kim (@TheChristinaKim), Angela Stanford (@Angela_Stanford) and Jane Park (@TheJanePark).

Players, however, are not allowed to tweet while playing during tournaments.

The LPGA, its players and tournaments currently have 1.2 million followers across a variety of social media platforms. Gulbis leads the LPGA with more than 116,000 followers on Twitter, while Creamer has more than 90,000 and Wie more than 82,000.

The LPGA expects to continue the program at the majority of tournaments on the 2012 schedule
