Asia’s largest wine fair kicks off in Hong Kong

Asia’s largest wine fair kicked off in Hong Kong on Thursday, attracting nearly 1,000 wine producers from around the world as the southern Chinese city cements its position as a key international wine hub. The Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair has 934 exhibitors from 37 countries – almost 40 percent more than last year – including Australia, France, India, Spain, the United States and featured nation Italy. Hong Kong has become a gateway to the booming wine market in mainland China, which is expected to be the world’s sixth largest wine consumer by 2014, according to leading global wine and spirits promoter Vinexpo.

“This has become a very exciting market for everyone. Everyone is ready to jump in,” said Stevie Kim, a spokeswoman for Italian wine industry promoter Vinitaly, which brought 200 Italian producers to the fair. “Italian wineries are ready to use Hong Kong as a bridge to go to China. There’s a great opportunity for us here,” she told AFP. Boutique winemakers like Australia’s Forest Hill and Farmer’s Leap sit side by side with major producers such as those from the French region of Bordeaux. The Bordeaux wine industry council said the region saw a 92 percent surge in export volumes to China in the 12 months to July, and a 69 percent increase to Hong Kong. Hong Kong overtook New York to become the world’s biggest wine auction hub last year, thanks in large part to the expansion of personal wealth in China and the abolishment of duties on wine imports in 2008.

“The Chinese people are increasingly adopting a Western lifestyle. More Chinese people will pick up the hobby of drinking wine, and more Chinese buyers are coming here to source for fine wines,” said Hong Kong Trade Development Council official Benjamin Chau. “The fair will enhance Hong Kong’s role as a major wine hub,” he said. Total sales from wine auctions – which are held every few weeks and have become a phenomenon in Hong Kong – reached US$164 million last year, while wine imports grew 73 percent to $895 million, up from $517 million in 2009.

Whole Foods Columbus Circle is on backorder already! The price is actually $11 per bottle for the Northeast region at a limited time for the launch period. The wine normally retails at wholesale for $30 per bottle. Any wine that is produced in Northern Italy rarely sells for less than $30 per bottle. Due to the dire straits of the U.S. economy, it only makes sense to start with a reasonable price that people can afford. In other words, it is a great deal for the quality and that is probably why it is already on backorder. : )

Carletto Wine certainly has its charms! The more Carletto Cabernet I had last night, the more handsome and captivating my date became! It’s uncanny, I started to see things that I never noticed before. It was so good that I remember having at least 3 glasses or 4 or was it 5?
Anyway, the rest as they say is history! (WINK)

Tomorrow I will post some delicious gourmet recipes from the former Award winning Cinema Italian Restaurant of Westchester County for fish and chicken that call for wine as a key ingredient from my “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant”! I absolutely love to cook and so will you after trying out these easy gourmet recipes at home. Friends and family are still always asking me to cook these dishes for them! One thing that Asian and Italian women have in common is the love of cooking!

OK so I am a little late? It is not like I am the Iron Chef. That would be Padma. The recipe is Chicken with Artichokes and Black Olives and the secret key Carletto ingredient is (DRUMROLL) 1 cup of Carletto Chardonnay Wine!

    INGREDIENTS:

    4 Chicken breasts pounded

1 chicken bullion cube or paste to taste

    1/2 cup of water

1 can of organic artichoke hearts

1 can of pitted organic black olives

    1 cup of Carletto Chardonnay

EXTRA VIRGIN Olive oil Spray Can

    1/2 cup whole wheat flour

    2 large eggs

1 lb bag of whole grain penne pasta

Take chicken breasts/clean in water/cut in strips/dip in egg and flour.

Have pan heated with olive oil spray and sautee chicken breast strips in pan for appx. 15 -20 mins.

In the other pan add chicken bullion and water, can of artichokes, can of olives, cup of wine and heat under medium heat/flame. Add cooked chicken strips to sauce one by one. Let sit on lower flame with lid on pan for at least 7-10 mins.

Boil water and cook the penne pasta.

Finally pour the final mixture over the penne pasta and serve.

    Serves four.
