Most Advanced Humanoid Robot: ASIMO sets world record
ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility), a humanoid robot created by Honda, has a total of 34 DOF (Degrees of Freedom) in all joints, can react to the natural movements of human beings, recognizes the objects and terrain of its environment, can respond to questions and costs $1 million USD to manufacture – setting the new world record for the Most Advanced Humanoid Robot.
The Guinness world record for the Earliest robot babysitter was set by The Papero Childcare robot which has been specially adapted with two (stereoscopic) camera “eyes” to recognize surroundings and faces, eight microphone “ears” to detect and recognize speech. Guinness World Records also mention the Oldest design for a humanoid robot, sketched by Leonardo Da Vinci (Italy) around 1495. The World’s Most Adavanced Humanoid Robot is the culmination of more than two decades of research and development by Honda engineers. A “Run with Asimo” smartphone and iphone app has also been produced to allow users to interact with a virtual version of the robot on their phone.
ASIMO was created 10 years ago at Honda’s Research & Development Wako Fundamental Technical Research Center in Japan as part of Honda’s programme of research and development into robotics and human mobility. After 10 years of innovation and development, it can now run and walk on uneven slopes and surfaces, climb stairs, and reach for and grasp objects. ASIMO can also comprehend and respond to simple voice commands, recognise faces and even avoid moving obstacles as it runs.
Honda’s robotics research ultimate goal is to develop ASIMO into a robot to help people, both by carrying out day-to-day tasks and by performing work too dangerous for humans.
