Thirty-four Chinese fishermen are missing after two boats sank as typhoon Bolaven approached South Korea.

The boats went down in gale-force winds and high waves off the southern South Korean island of Jeju, Yonhap news agency said.

The state weather agency issued a typhoon warning today for Seoul, the capital of about 10 million people, as the storm moved north.

Taiwan was also bracing for more bad weather.

The typhoon brought heavy rain and strong winds to southern and western areas of South Korea, cutting power and bringing down street lights and church spires.
Schools shut

Schools in Jeju were closed or reduced classes and many schools in other provinces were to be closed on Tuesday.

The US and South Korean military called a temporary halt to a large-scale joint military exercise that began last week.
