Borough Council President Jeannie Tsukamoto, the only Asian-American in elected office in Morris County, and a board member of Morris Habitat for Humanity board member, was the keynote speaker at an Asian-American Heritage Celebration on June 13 in Parsippany, sponsored by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, Parsippany Mayor James R. Barberio and the Parsippany Police Department, and the New Jersey Asian-American Law Enforcement Officers Association.
The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office presented Tsukamoto with its 2012 recognition award for her volunteerism and public service.
A first-generation Asian-American, Tsukamoto shared how she learned from her grandmother in Taiwan that she must “do everything possible to help people in need and to ease their suffering.”
Tsukamoto said she has not only lived this lesson, but carried forward the tradition in her own household, where she and her husband, A. Andrew Tsukamoto, and their two children have all served as volunteers with the American Red Cross. Tsukamoto said volunteering is “about making our community a better place. And it’s about having fun while doing it.”
She encouraged Asian-Americans to make a “positive difference in our community, by getting involved, voting, running for office and volunteering.”
