The impact of K-pop and YouTube wonder Psy is being felt in a big way on the music scene with nomination spots for this year’s MTV European Music Awards.

The group Super Junior last seen in Singapore in February after picking up the MAMA-Singapore Choice Award, have been nominated as the Best Asian Act.

The winner of this category gets to proceed into the next round to determine the Best Worldwide Act winner.

Last year, another K-pop act, Big Bang, took home the Best Worldwide Act.

Vying Super Junior for the MTV honours are Japan’s EXILE, China’s Hangeng (former member of Super Junior), Taiwan’s Jolin Tsai, and Malaysia’s Yuna.

Giving the awards more bite than Korean kimchi is the second listing from Seoul, the Gangnam-hero, Psy.

The viral hit music video “Gangnam Style” is nominated in the Best Video category, against Katy Perry (Wide Awake), Lady Gaga (Marry the Night), M.I.A. (Bad Girls), and Rihanna (We Found Love).

The Korean song which parodies life in the wealthy Seoul neighborhood of Gangnam, known for its party scene and luxurious style, is the only non-English song in the running.

And Psy, who attended the Berklee School of Music, has made clear that despite the success of his catchy Korean composition on iTunes and YouTube, he has no intention to offer an English version.

“I think verbal is not that important… I think just the dance moves and how it sounds and how it looks, I think that was the point …” he told MTV.

Psy, who has released a number of albums and singles in South Korea since 2000 is now signed with Justin Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, for an album that should cater to his English fan-base.

And after that, there’ll be plans for “Gangnam Style” follow-up with some of his older dance moves, he told MTV, but “No more animals.”
