Korean politician Lee Suk Hyun on Friday claimed that K-pop star Rain had enjoyed a total of 62 off days since he enlisted in the Korean military in October last year, and become part of the military’s public relations unit, reported Korean media.

This is 22 days more than the number of off days enjoyed by the average soldier.

Rain also had the privilege of sometimes staying outside the military base where he is stationed, and could perform in civilian clothing during his concerts, unlike his predecessors in the public relations unit, who had to do so in uniform.

Citing these discrepancies, Lee, who drew these figures from the Defense Ministry’s reports, questioned if Rain had received preferential treatment.

He added that this casts doubt on the relevance of the military’s public relations unit.

After completing his basic military training earlier this year, Rain applied to become part of the public relations unit, taking over the spot vacated by actor Lee Jun Ki, who had just completed his military service obligations at the time.

Rain’s duties as an “entertainment soldier” in the unit include being an ambassador of the military, hosting award ceremonies and performing for the troops to lift their morale.

However, some Korean netizens have since commented that it is odd to have male artists like Rain entertain the troops, pointing out that most enlistees would prefer to watch performances by girl groups like SNSD instead.
