We won’t be seeing ‘Flowers of War’ tonight!

Estimated to be the most expensive movie ever made in China, the $100-million (U.S.) film stars Christian Bale under the direction of Zhang Yimou, whose early career includes vivid art films ( Ju Dou, Raise the Red Lantern) and, more recently, a mixture of low-budget, neo-realistic stories (The Story of Qiu Ju, Not One Less) and CGI-heavy legend movies such as Hero and House of Flying Daggers, designed to provide Chinese audiences with an alternative to Hollywood blockbusters.

Even Christian Bale couldn’t get an Oscar nom for this film. It was selected as the Chinese entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards but did not make the final shortlist.

“Shakespeare in Love” was the Weinstein Brothers version of Oceans Eleven for the New Rack Pack starring Gwyneth Paltrow, her then friend with benefits Ben Affleck and the rest of the gang! Everyone jump in the moat! Sorry but it is sooo true. I needed to get that off my REAL big chest. I feel better now. And Gwyneth has so much going for her but a British Accent and an outstanding singing voice are not among them. I am sorry that “Uncle Stephen” or “Uncle Harvey” never told you that. Stick to what you do best. You are very witty and were phenomenal on ‘Glee’. Your character is hilarious! But please don’t ever use your connections again to shortchange serious and truly deserving actors like Kate Blanchett. 🙂

Christian Bale is too good for Hollywood! He is amongst the rare and extraordinary gifted actors of his time. Sir Lawrence Olivier, Sean Connery and Vivienne Leigh were all so far above Hollywood and so is Christian! The most cultured film to come out of Hollywood is a Harvey Weinstein adaptation of a British based historical event. These are hardly the Astors or the Windsors of Kent but rather the Berger Brothers of Brooklyn. AKA The cliffnotes version of classics. Need I say more?? An improvement in genre and quality yes, but there are several alternatives to (Ho)llywood now. Pretty soon Oscar will stand for Oscar Mayer.

The bar is being set much higher these days and there is a very smart and discriminating audience out there who won’t settle anymore. The days are numbered. Thank god “The Artist” won because if it didn’t it would have been a travesty almost as bad as Gwyneth Paltrow’s win for “Shakespeare in Love” over Kate Blanchett’s performance in “Elizabeth”! I am still popping Tums whenever I think back to that one.
