Malaysia’s infamous sex blogging couple Alvin Tan and Vivian Lee are in
Malaysia’s infamous sex blogging couple Alvin Tan and Vivian Lee are in hot soup again – this time, for posting insensitive Facebook comments on Muslims and mocking the fasting month of Ramadan.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has called the duo to report to the commission’s office to record their statements and assist in investigations.
The internet regulator says investigations are expected to take a week.
A report will then be submitted to the Attorney General Chambers for further action.
The two bloggers are alleged to have breached the law that forbids offensive content and improper use of network facilities.
If found guilty, the couple could face a maximum fine of US$16,000 or a year in jail.
The duo allegedly posted on their Facebook page a photo of themselves enjoying “bak kut teh” (a Chinese herbal pork soup ) with a caption “Selamat Berbuka Puasa” – a Malay greeting for breaking fast.
The Islamic religion, which has just begun a month-long fast to mark Ramadan, forbids the consumption of pork.
Their action has angered Muslims as well as the non-Muslim community in Malaysia.
Mr Tan and Ms Lee later overlayed the dish with other food stuff.
They have also issued an apology, calling it their “stupidest stunt”.
In a video uploaded on their youtube channel, the couple apologised for the insensitive Facebook posting, saying it was done in humour.
“We are recording this video to ask for forgiveness for offending Muslims in this holy month of Ramadan,” said Mr Tan in the video.
“We sincerely regret offending religious beliefs and sensitivities in multi-cultural Malaysia,” he added, speaking in Malay.
Mr Tan and Ms Lee created controversy last year by blogging about their sex lives. Mr Tan, who was a law undergraduate at a Singapore university, has since been suspended.
Of course, the Taiwanese Animators have come up with their own video rendition!
