Emmy Nominations for 2012 Announced
The Emmy Nominations for 2012 are as follows, along with predicted wins.
Best Comedy
Despite suggestions that Louie deserved recognition, it didn’t make the cut. Neither did Parks and Recreation. Nods went to Girls, 30 Rock and Modern Family. The Big Bang Theory also made the list, as did Curb Your Enthusiasm and Veep.
The winning money’s split here. Some believe Parks and Recreation is overdue for a win; however, Modern Family usually takes the trophy. Still, 30 Rock or Curb Your Enthusiasm could take it all.
Best Drama
This grouping offered few surprises. Perennial favorite Mad Men made the list. So did Boardwalk Empire and Downtown Abbey. Also making the cut were Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and Homeland. The Good Wife, however, got left unnoticed.
Look for Mad Men or Downtown Abbey to win. However, Boardwalk Empire might steal the prize. Game of Thrones has zero chance of winning, even though it should.
Best Drama Actress
This group did offer some surprises. Old favorites like Glenn Close (Damages), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) and Elizabeth Moss (Mad Men) made the cut. Surprisingly so did Kathy Bates (Harry’s Law) and Michelle Dockery (Downtown Abbey). Claire Danes (Homeland) also made the list while Anna Torv (Fringe) and Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) did not.
Who will win is anybody’s guess, but it will probably be Margulies. The woman who deserves the win wasn’t nominated.
Best Drama Actor
Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Michael C. Hall (Dexter) seem permanently attached to this grouping. So does Brian Cranston (Breaking Bad). However, perennial favorite — Hugh Laurie (House) — was missing. Instead, Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Damian Lewis (Homeland) and Hugh Bonneville (Downtown Abbey) made the cut.
It doesn’t matter who wins this one. The nominations are solid. However, it could be Cranston’s to win or lose.
Best Comedy Actress
Nods went to the usual — Tina Fey (30 Rock), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreations) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep). Zooey Deschanel (New Girl), Lena Dunham (Girls) and Melissa McCarthy (Mike and Molly) also got nods. Missing was Enlightened’s Laura Dern.
Look for Deschanel to come out of nowhere and take the win. Everyone loves her.
Best Comedy Actor
Only Jim Parsons of Big Bang Theory made the list. Co-star Johnny Galecki did not. Other nominees included Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men) and Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm). Rounding out the list were Don Cheadle (House of Lies) and Louis C.K. (Louie).
Galecki should have made the cut and possibly the win. He didn’t, so this one’s up for grabs. It’s possible Louis C.K. or Larry David will take the win even though it should go to Jon Cryer.
Best Competition Series
This group offered multiple winner Amazing Race and the usual bridesmaids, Dancing With the Stars, Project Runway and So You Think You Can Dance at least getting recognition. Top Chef and The Voice also made the cut, while American Idol didn’t make the list.
There’s probably no surprise here. Amazing Race always wins and probably will do it again despite being bested by So You Think You Can Dance.
Best Non-Competition Series
This odd group saw some odd names. They included Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, Antiques Roadshow, Myth Busters and Shark Tank. Nods also went to Undercover Boss and Who Do You Think You Are?
Best Miniseries
American Horror Story popped up in this category along with Hatfields and McCoys, Game Change and Hemingway and Gelhorn. Two BBC faves popped up too — Sherlock and Luther.
This one’s hard to call, but it will probably go to Hatfields and McCoys. It should belong to American Horror Story.
Outstanding Variety Series
Nods here went to Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report and Real Time with Bill Maher. The winner could be anyone.
Outstanding Animated Series
The Simpsons and American Dad made the cut. So did Bob’s Burgers, Futurama and The Penguins of Madagascar. The win could go anywhere.
