While 35 percent of Americans ages 16 and older are tablet owners, adoption rates for this mobile device can vary widely by demographic, according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center. In its Internet & American Life Project, Pew found only marginal increases in overall tablet adoption between May and September, although tablet ownership has increased by more than 25 percent since November 2012.

This most recent snapshot of tablet consumers provides fresh insight into which groups are embracing tablet ownership, and to what degree. For the first time, English-speaking Asian-Americans were measured on their own, and the results were surprising: 50 percent of that demographic age 16 and older own a tablet, according to the survey.

That’s well above not only the national average, but also the adoption rate of any other ethnicity measured. Hispanics were next at 37 percent tablet ownership, following by Caucasians at 35 percent and African-Americans at 29 percent.

This study also differed from past versions by including 16- and 17-year-olds in the survey instead of only those 18 and over. The numbers justify the reason for this expansion of age group: 16- to 17-year-olds have the highest tablet ownership rate of any other age demographic, with 46 percent claiming to be tablet owners. The next-closest demographic was the 30-49 age range, which found 44 percent of all individuals owning a tablet.

A number of lifestyle demographics revealed themselves to be more engaging of the tablet market than others. Most notably, tablets are far more popular in urban areas than in rural areas by a margin of 36 to 27 percent. But suburban areas actually fared best, with a 37 percent ownership rate.

Part of that suburban trend could relate to the higher incomes of the areas surveyed. While just 22 percent of homes earning less than $30,000 per year own a tablet, adoption rates soar to 65 percent in households earning at least $150,000 annually.

Tablet ownership also appears to be positively correlated with education. Nearly half of all college graduates own a tablet, compared to 21 percent of those without a high school diploma.
