‘Jersey Shore’ canceled: MTV announces final season – Thank God!

MTV has announced that Jersey Shore, the long running reality TV show about New Jersey Italian-Americans, will conclude after this season. The show’s sixth — and now final — season is set to premiere on October 4. The show first debuted in 2009 and became an instant hit among teens and young adults fascinated with the stereotypical portrayals of the partying lifestyles of young Jersey residents and their boisterous and raunchy escapades.

The show also sparked a new lingo within the teen vernacular. Words such as “category_ido/category_idette” and phrases such as “cabs are here” and “butterface flavor” have been the source of a new, jocular language. The cast has also been criticized for perpetuating the Italian/New Jersey stereotype.

The cast, consisting of Snooki (aka Nicole Polizzi), who just recently had a baby, JWoww (aka Jenni), Sammi, The Situation (aka Mike), Pauly D, Vinny, Angela and Ronnie, made their debut as housemates in a beachhouse in Seaside, New Jersey. The next season followed them to Miami, where they wintered before heading to Italy for the following season and then back to Jersey.

The show has sparked a few spin-offs including Snooki & JWoww and The Pauly D Project, with fairly tepid ratings.

Catch the last season of Jersey Shore starting October 4, 2012, at 10/9c on MTV.
