Back in November, Woods said this about matching Jack Nicklaus’ mark of 18 majors: “It takes a career. It takes a long time to win a lot of major championships. Since 2008 I’ve been there with a chance to win half of them.”
He’s right. Since ’09, Woods has nine top-10 finishes in 18 appearances in majors, including blowing a two-stroke 54-hole lead in the 2009 PGA Championship.
As of now, Woods has 14 majors, but a ton of golf left. However, as The Golf Channel’s Jason Sobel points out, only two players have won four or more majors after their 38 birthday: Nicklaus, who won four; and Ben Hogan, who won five.
And, for the sake of comparison, 43-year-old Phil Mickelson has just five career majors.
Uh oh! He’s getting up there!
