Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and Billy Joel tonight!!
Tonight, the Boss, Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Christina Aguilera and Sting will sing at a benefit concert and telethon for the American Red Cross’ relief efforts. “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together” will air tonight at 8 on many channels, including NBC, the USA Network, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo and E!
The one-hour concert, which will be hosted by Matt Lauer of the “Today” show, will take place at NBC’s Rockefeller Plaza studios, and tickets will not be made available to the general public. It will stream on the internet at NBC.com, and be heard on Sirius XM satellite radio’s E Street Radio (channel 20).
Springsteen’s deep affection for the Shore is an article of faith among fans. The Freehold native has sung about Asbury Park’s fading glories, its devastation and its revival. “Atlantic City,” a devastated acoustic guitar ballad from the “Nebraska” album, has long been embraced as an anthem of revitalization in Shore communities. “My City of Ruins,” an elegiac song written about Asbury Park, became associated with 9/11 after Springsteen sang it at a post-9/11 fundraising telethon. If he performs “My City of Ruins” tonight, the song will, sadly and unambivalently, return to the Jersey Shore.
Like Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi first distinguished himself in the many bars and clubs of Monmouth County. This summer, Bon Jovi headlined the Bamboozle Festival on the beach in Asbury Park, and the leonine frontman spoke with great passion about his band’s early shows at the Fast Lane.
Billy Joel, one of pop’s great tunesmiths, has often written eloquently about Long Island. “The Downeaster Alexa,” a song from his 1989 “Storm Front” album, is the lament of a traditional Long Island Sound fisherman confronted by the encroachment of urban New York. Joel sings of his upbringing in suburban Nassau County in many songs, including “The Ballad of Billy the Kid,” “Only the Good Die Young” and the epic “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant.”
