In naming Meera Joshi to run the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission, Mayor Bill de Blasio has selected the first Indian American to hold this position and the second woman, reports Ela Dutt in News India Times.

The announcement is the latest in a string of appointments of Indian Americans to important posts in the new city administration.

One of De Blasio’s first appointments when he took office was to bring back from Chicago, Dr. Ramanathan Raju as New York City’s Commissioner of Health and Hospitals Corporation. De Blasio recently appointed Nisha Agarwal to lead his office of immigrant affairs; He also appointed Meenakshi Srinivasan as chair of the city’s Board of Standards and Appeals; and Rahul Merchant as his first Citywide Chief Information and Innovation Officer.

Joshi, who was born and raised in Philadelphia with an Indian father and a British-American mother, told News India Times that she “keeps in close touch with her Indian roots and visits India occasionally so that her children know their extended family.”
