Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems!

Michelle, like many other YouTubers, uses music in her videos. One musician she’s featured is EDM star Kaskade, whose former label, Ultra, is pressing charges against Michelle for copyright infringement. Their goal is to prevent her from using any of their musicians’ tracks in the future and get up to $150,000 per case of misused copyright. So basically any song she used, they want a big check for—especially since she’s making money off her videos (and technically their client’s music).

In an interesting twist, Kaskade is on Michelle’s side and even tweeted about the whole matter, thanking her for helping his career and getting his name out there. Obviously the artist didn’t have an issue with her using his music, but it’s the court that gets to decide whether his old label will reap the benefits.

Update: Michelle’s legal team released an official statement about the matter: “Ultra’s lawsuit against Michelle Phan lacks any merit. Ultra agreed to allow Michelle to use the music and Michelle intends to fight this lawsuit and bring her own claims against Ultra. Michelle’s intention has always been to promote other artists, creating a platform for their work to be showcased to an international audience. Kaskade, whose music has been featured in Michelle’s videos, has publicly defended Michelle against Ultra’s claims and acknowledges the success he’s gained from her support.”

Come on! Leave the girl alone!
