Zang Toi’s Fall 2013 fashion show in New York City
Zang Toi’s new Fall/Winter 2013 collection was released last night. The Malaysian designer has served several style arbiters including Sharon Stone, Patti LaBelle, Ivana Trump, Hazelle Goodman, Kelly Preston, Kirstie Alley, Jennifer Tilly, Meg Ryan, and Fergie from The Black Eyed Peas. Be it the House of Toi signature collection or the “Z” collection, his moderately priced bridge line, Toi’s creations are marketed as original and feminine pieces.
Zang’s new line is a modern take on the imperial Russia that reimagine the historical and opulent looks of Faberge Egg and Peterhof Palace. He used a variety of royal colors such as gold, red and blue to represent Imperial Russia. The first group of clothing featured short dresses with tights and socks as embellishments; the second group was evening dresses with exaggerated shoulders, long back swings and furry wraps. Each piece was so elegant and flirty at the same time. When the finale dress came out, the crowd burst into applause (which actually happened several times during the show).
In addition to Zang’s gorgeous dresses, hair and makeup definitely added more royal vibe into the show. Eiji—the famous Japanese hair stylist who has been doing hair for New York Fashion Week for more than a decade, created the hair! “ It is very easy for me to come up with a new hairstyle. What’s hard is to get it done!”, said Eiji during the interview. He was busy curling wigs with his team backstage. All the Marie Antoinette style hair was wigs attached to the models hair. “I want it to be frizzy but not too frizzy. And instead of combs, we just style it with bare hands, which makes the look more natural,” said Eiji.
With fabulous dresses, humbling music and sophisticated accessories, Zang Toi’s show was just so amazing that I felt like I was watching an Imperial Russian feast. Definitely looking forward to his work in the future.
