A Song for Moms
Months on end without a good night’s sleep. Packed, hectic days that blur from one to the next. The incessant, daily grind of homefront tasks. And the cries, whines, and tantrums that are part and parcel of early childhood. Such seems to be life for most parents of young children in our society.
As Mother’s Day approaches (in the USA), I’d like to share with you a song which may be an encouragement to a mom that you know, or to you if you’re a mom. It’s a song called “One Heartbeat at a Time” from Steven Curtis Chapman’s 2007 album This Moment. It’s not one of his better-known songs, but it ought to be! As a dad, I found that it deeply resonated with me and lifted my spirit, too. Here’s some of what Steven sings:
You’re up all night with a screaming baby
You run all day at the speed of life
And every day you feel a little bit less
Like the beautiful woman you are
So you fall into bed when you run out of hours
And you wonder if anything worth doing got done
Oh, maybe you just don’t know
Or maybe you’ve forgotten
You, you are changing the world
One little heartbeat at a time
Making history with every touch
And every smile
Oh, you, you may not see it now
But I believe that time will tell
How you, you are changing the world
One little heartbeat at a time
With every, “I know you can do it”
And every tear that you kiss away
So many little things that seem to go unnoticed
They’re just like the drops of rain, over time they become a river
And you, you are changing the world
One little heartbeat at a time
This song reminds us that even the little, seemingly routine things have, potentially, incredible value. So if you know a mom who could use a little pick-me-up, pass along this song to them as part of your Mother’s Day wishes. And for you moms who are feeling weary lately – or perhaps perpetually – may this song warm your soul. You can listen to it here. (It’s also available on Amazon.com and iTunes.)
