California Attorney General Kamala Harris will announced her candidacy for the U.S.
California Attorney General Kamala Harris will announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Barbara Boxer.
The Associated Press cited an unnamed adviser with knowledge of Harris’ plans.
The decision by Harris, a rising Democratic Party star, will change the dynamic in a 2016 race that has been taking shape quickly since Boxer announced last week should would not run for a fifth term.
Harris’ decision follows Monday’s announcement by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, a friend of the attorney general and a potential rival, that he would not run for the Senate. Harris, Newsom and former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who announced this weekend he is exploring a Senate campaign, have been considered the top Democrats to watch in the jockeying to replace Boxer.
Harris recently was sworn in to a second term as California’s top law enforcement official. She has long been mentioned as a possible candidate for Senate or governor.
Billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer is also eyeing the race.
