The fight for California’s “top cop” position intensified as Republican attorney general

The fight for California’s “top cop” position intensified as Republican attorney general candidate Steve Cooley made his last effort here on Saturday to win support from Asian American voters.

In a rally at the Pacific Palms Conference Resort in the City of Industry, Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley, who is fighting against his Democratic opponent Kamala Harris, told Asian American community leaders that public safety and economic development are two major goals he will achieve if he wins election.

Cooley thanked Asian Americans for their support to him in his election for Los Angeles County District Attorney before and asked for their continued support for him to win the state attorney general election.

California’s attorney general is the state’s chief law enforcement officer and is considered as only second in importance to the governor.

Cooley, though himself a Republican, stressed that the position of California attorney general is non-partisan and he would serve all the people in California, whether Republicans or Democrats. However, he criticized his Democratic opponent Harris as partisan.

Cooley claimed to have the endorsement of 57 law enforcement organizations in the state and stressed that he has the support of Asian Americans and other ethnic groups.

To prosecute corrupted government officials is part of the tasks of the state attorney general, and Cooley stressed that he would hold integrity of public officials. However, his opponent Harris, who is now San Francisco District attorney, attacked Cooley that he was given thousands of dollars worth of gifts that he didn’t disclose.
