A political expert is advising California Republicans to consider winning over one particular minority group in future elections if they want to see a greater number backing the GOP.
A poll conducted by the Los Angeles Times and the University of Southern California showed that Asians are more willing to back the Republican Party than are other minorities. Dr. Michael Chang, chair of the Asian & American Studies Department at De Anza College in Cupertino, says many Asians perceive Republicans as the party that is stronger in anti-Communist ideals — and some Asians side with the party’s conservative values, he adds.
“Older Asian-Americans tend to be a little bit more on the conservative side — both socially and fiscally, I think,” says Chang, a former mayor of Cupertino.
Although polling data from the midterm elections showed that Latinos and Asians both voted for Democrat Jerry Brown over Republican Meg Whitman in California’s gubernatorial race, and favored Democrat Barbara Boxer rather than the GOP’s Carly Fiorina in the Senate race, the Times poll reported that Asians tended to agree with Republicans on social and fiscal issues — but did not react as strongly to immigration issues as Latinos did.
“It’s not necessarily the most important issue for Asian-Americans,” says the immigrant from Hong Kong. “I think because we do not share a contiguous border, the issue doesn’t have that kind of immediacy for a lot of Asian-Americans.”
The Asian vote comprises seven percent of the total number of California voters. Chang argues that GOP candidates in The Golden State will have a greater chance of winning if they resonate with that voter bloc.
