A week before India’s Independence Day, the section of the bustling Oak

A week before India’s Independence Day, the section of the bustling Oak Tree Road that houses several Indian businesses in Iselin, N.J., was renamed India Square. The official renaming occurred on Aug. 7 with Woodbridge Mayor John McCormac unveiling new road signs, according to a press release.

Paying rich tribute to the business owners of the area, Mayor McCormac said that Woodbridge Township greatly benefited from the growth of Indian-owned businesses along Oak Tree Road.

“We could see the economic turnaround of the area because of the success of Indian businesses,” McCormac was quoted in the release as saying.

McCormac hinted that he would appoint more members of the Indian American community to his administration. He said that his policy was to encourage the Indian American community take an active role in the governance of the Township.

Speaking on behalf of Indian-American business owners, Nayan Parikh, who holds the position of vice-chairman of Woodbridge Housing Authority, complimented the mayor for his support to the Indian-American community.

“As a great supporter of the Indian-American community, Mayor McCormac has given a boost to our community’s image,” he added.

Those who attended the inaugural event included H. R. Shah, Chandrakant Patel, Dilip Mehta, Manher Shah, Mahesh Shah, Kapil Shah, Prafull Patel, Prafull Vaid and Deepak Shah.

Earlier in the day, the mayor opened a new cricket field at Kennedy Park in Iselin. The event was organized by the Woodbridge Wellness Committee, the press release said.
