Montpellier, the expanding university town goes on to keep its small town charm with many a cafe terrace upon which to while away an hour (or two) and it is full of lovely character too!
A south-west Languedoc-Roussillon city, Montpellier shines from the crowd as the instantly likeable tourist destination. Stuffed with sights like mountains, sea, sun, vineyards as well as the Place de la Comedie you won’t be lacking sights to see and places to go.
Improvements are afoot in Montpellier as the city continues to evolve, so expect the unexpected if this is a revisit trip from a couple of years back. Notably, keep an eye out when wandering around Comedie for the newly constructed conference and music centre set inside a magnificently landscaped esplanade.
Travelling around Montpellier couldn’t be much more simple or more scintillating with the efficient tram system. No time before has riding a tram been more stimulating – some even say riding the trams in Montpellier is ‘sexy’. Intrigued? We’ll leave you to determine that one!
Top tourist destinations in Montpellier for fans of local history are the Musee Atgar along with the Musee de L’Histoire de Montpellier. Other popular museums would be the Musee du Vieux Montpellier and Musee Languedocien. The Jardin des Plantes (amongst the largest urban gardens in Europe) is definitely a special location to gather your breath while enjoying the scenery. Whilst shopping is at its best along the Rue de la Loge next door to the central Place de la Comedie. At the end of many a substantial climb in Montpellier your time and efforts are rewarded by such fantastic architectural delights as the Cathedral of St Pierre and the Arc de Triomphe.
Check out the jewels of Montpellier, the attractions are rich and a joy to get to know! Should you descend upon the city during the Summer, you are going to experience the festivities of Sete aka the little Venice of the Languedoc. An essential part of the charming fishing port’s culture is to rejoice its heritage boasting a Fiesta Latina Festival involving an abundance of food, wine and water jousting. Montpellier is the perfect location for getting out and about in the Cevennes National Park.
A great place to visit if you realise you have got a thirst coming on! Utilize the vineyards of nearby Herault where deliciously rich lavish wines originate from. Wine tasting galore available here as Herault has long served as host for the cellars of the Coteaux du Languedoc and Vins du Pays d’Oc.
You should be spoilt for choice over places to check out with next door neighbours which include the picture postcard towns of Carcassonne, Nimes and Perpignan. Enjoy the nice welcome of the locals in this convivial region in the south-west.
With a lot of historical attractions in the region, you’ll be spoilt for choice of what to see including the Pont du Gard and the Canal du Midi as well as 300 kilometres of navigable waterways. With 180 kilometres of beaches, Languedoc has around 22 marinas (along with the largest in Europe, Port Camargue). There’s in addition a great winter sports agenda in the region for all those active people amongst us. Other delightful experiences that are recommended include a drive out for sailing with your loved ones at Aude along with horseback riding or snow skiing at the Pyrenees Orientale.
