The motorcade of police officers, family and friends stretched for miles along the expressway. A procession leading retired police officer Sonny Chung to his final resting place.

Even in the pouring rain, a line of police officers stood at attention and saluted as the flag-draped casket carrying Sonny Chung, was brought into White Haven Memorial Park.

Chung was the first Korean-born police officer in Monroe County. He will be buried in the Korean War Veterans section of the cemetery.

Chung’s family was comforted by many friends and relatives, some of whom traveled here from South Korea. They were also surrounded by the family of police officers from across the state who attended Sonny Chung’s funeral.

Sonny’s best friend, Sean Singh, says he will remember Sonny’s smile, energy and sense of adventure. The two met when they were 15 and studying to be engineers at City College in New York City.

Singh served as a pallbearer at his friend’s funeral. Greece Police Chief Todd Baxter went through the police academy with Sonny. Baxter tells us: “he was a personal friend…a great cop and a great friend.”

Baxter says when he thinks of Sonny, he smiles, because of the positive energy the retired police officer had.

He loved his job and his family. He is survived by his wife Kara and two sons, Jason and Elliott.
