Manny Pacquiao bombs in Philippines Basketball

The current WBO welterweight champion made his debut in the Philippines Basketball Association with the KIA Sorento as a player-coach, and it wasn’t pretty.

Pac-Man scored just one point, committed two turnovers and grabbed a rebound in his team’s 88-77 loss to a team called Blackwater Sports.

The eight-division champion –?? who also happens to be a congressman in his native Philippines –?? was drafted 11th overall in the PBA’s draft this year, making him the oldest rookie and shortest player in the league. Based on the highlights, it’s starting to feel like the KIA Sorento drafted him for publicity rather than his skills.

The 35-year-old plans to play only spot minutes for his new team because he’s training for a fight in November in Macau against American Chris Algieri.

Pacquiao, who stands 5 feet 6, has always shown an affinity for basketball. He played at the Golden State Warriors’ training facility in September and has also played with Reggie Miller and Charles Barkley.

I know how Manny feels. The Catholic High School I attended, run by Basilian’s, had a very good team, but I had no talent, so I struggled to get good grades in any class taught by a basketball coach.

I guess he won’t be playing for the Harlem Globetrotters. My dad took my brother and me to see them at the Garden when I was a child. They were so talented and entertaining! 🙂
