Mark Wahlberg wants pardon for disfiguring Vietnamese man

Mark Wahlberg is seeking a pardon from the state of Massachusetts for a vicious racially-charged attack he committed as a teenager that left a man blind in one eye.

Wahlberg, who served 45 days in jail after the assault, says his record continues to impact him and could prevent businesses, such as restaurants, that work with him from getting licenses.

He insists he has come a long way since April 1988, when he attacked Thanh Lam with a five-foot stick while yelling slurs at him in order to steal the two cases of beer he was carrying. Authorities wrote that he also made ‘numerous unsolicited racial statements about ‘gooks’ and “slant-eyed gooks”.’

According to the press release:

Wahlberg was convicted as an adult when he was 16 years old for clubbing a man over the head with a wooden stick outside a Dorchester Avenue convenience store and attempting to steal the man’s beer.

While trying to evade police, he punched a second man in the face, and when he was apprehended police found a bag of marijuana in his pocket. Wahlberg wrote in his petition that he had been under the influence of alcohol and drugs when he committed the crimes, and is “deeply sorry” for his actions.

Wahlberg says that this pardon will allow him to help troubled youth, and the charge currently prohibits him from becoming a parole or probation offer. Wahlberg is known for being involved with all sorts of philanthropic organizations including his own Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation, and the Dorchester Boys and Girls Club.

Convicted as an adult? That’s pretty bad. There is a reason why you are tried as an adult.

Well this has certainly changed my opinion of Mr. Wahlberg!!!

Mark Wahlberg wants pardon for disfiguring Vietnamese man? 🙁

Granted he was young and he was a different person back then but we all have to pay for our crimes, regardless of age. The innocent Vietnamese victim is still blind in one eye. Nothing will change that. Wahlberg can still help youths without being granted a pardon. Also, he makes a great livelihood for a person who committed such an awful crime and should be very grateful for that. Just accept the consequences and move on. No special “movie star” treatment for you=so sorry! Lucky for him, he didn’t get any of the Judges in my family = he would’ve been in the slammer for ages without any opportunities to become a “movie star”! I have to admit that I have a serious problem with former murderers and convicts becoming famous Rap Stars and/or Celebrities and enjoying “the good life.” Jay Z is even being presented as an authority figure by the US Government. That is one of the main reasons why other Countries like China view the US Government as a laughing joke! I think there is something really sick about going from murderer and/or criminal status to celebrity status and yet it happens in THIS COUNTRY every day. What about all of the innocent victims? Don’t they have any rights?? Despite the great wealth amassed by these so-called “celebrities”, their former victims do not receive any proper treatment and/or financial awards whatsoever. Now that is the real crime! 🙁
