White House gives a boost to Kamala Harris
I think Kamala Harris is going to give Hillary Clinton a run for her money, as in first woman President!
State Attorney General Kamala Harris got an early boost from the White House for her 2016 U.S. Senate race Monday, as she was tapped to be the high-profile messenger of how President Obama’s executive actions on immigration are helping California’s economy.
Harris said Obama’s recent actions, including expanding the number of undocumented immigrants protected from immediate deportation, will boost California’s economy “by anywhere from $11.7 billion to $27.5 billion over the next decade.”
Harris, describing herself as a “daughter of immigrants,” delivered an impassioned defense during a phone news conference on Obama’s immigration policies. Although it plowed no new ground on the issue, the news conference gave Harris a plum opportunity to address a major state issue with the White House’s imprimatur. It also provided her with a venue to air her own talking points.
The White House’s decision to have Harris promote Obama’s policies underscored speculation that she can expect both campaign and fundraising help from the president when she runs next year to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer. Harris’ ties to Obama go back to before his 2008 presidential campaign, when she became one of the first public officials to endorse him and campaigned for him in early-primary states.
Harris praised Obama’s recent move to suspend the Secure Communities program, which sought to enlist local law enforcement’s help in deporting undocumented immigrants. Replacing it with a focus on terrorism, hard-core gangs and felons, she said, means that “rather than apprehending and removing immigrants who have no criminal background,” law enforcement will be concentrating on “true threats” to public safety.
