Sang A – Korean Hand Bag Designer launches in the United States

All women love to carry the next “it” bag and no one knows this better than Korean handbag designer, Sang A. Starting this Fall, Sang A has created her first collection of luxurious clutches and totes created from exotic skins such as python and alligator ranging in prices from $1,000 to $10,000 and selling in boutiques across the United States and Asia. Sang A started as a performer in Korea, studying acting and singing. She became recognized as a popular stage and television actress with three recording albums under the Samsung label. As her career soared, she began to design costumes for herself and her band members. Becoming an accessories designer was a natural fit for this artist. Upon her move to New York, Sang A enrolled at Parsons School of Design and began to pursue her love of fashion design. She began working with stylists to learn the business and eventually decided to design on her own. Sang A is an avid supporter and collector of the arts. On her unusual career move, she laughs, “If I weren’t designing accessories, I would probably be producing Broadway musicals.”

ASIANCE: How did you get started in handbag design?

Sang A: I started my fashion career as a stylist working for Victoria Bartlett and Lisa Von Weise. I studied at Parsons – General Fashion Business, Fashion Drawing. After a year and half doing styling, I decided to go out on my own as a handbag designer.

ASIANCE: Are you still an actress?

Sang A: No. (laughs)

ASIANCE: How has your background in acting influenced your designs?

Sang A: When I did acting on TV and stage, I designed my own outfits and styled myself. It was an incredible experience to be a designer.

ASIANCE: What kind of materials do you like to use?

Sang A: Alligator, Python, Lizard, Ostrich and Mink.

ASIANCE: Who is your favorite accessories designer?

Sang A: Pierre Hardy, Bruno Frisoni

ASIANCE: What do you have planned for Fall?

Sang A: Hand patchwork mink evening bag – ELLA , which is great because it's very stream line and fits comfortably under your arm or in your hand. And the MAX – my oversized round hobo which comes in beautiful colors such as deep red shiny python, rich blue shiny python and dark green shiny python.

ASIANCE: What are your favorite shapes?

Sang A: Square

ASIANCE: How is the market different between the US and Asia?

Sang A: In the United States it is very much about personal style. In Asia, it’s much more about the trends.
