Kiran Ahuja, a national advocate for women of color, has been named executive director of the White House Initiative on Asian American and Pacific Islanders.

Ahuja was founding executive director of the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum from 2003-2008. The organization currently has offices in Washington, D.C.; Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Oakland, Calif.

Growing up in Savannah, Ga., Ahuja attended Spelman College in Atlanta, NAPAWF said. She also worked in the office of Georgia’s first African American Congresswoman elected since Reconstruction.

Ahuja attended law school at the University of Georgia and was selected one of five trial attorneys in an honors program in the civil rights division of the U.S. Department of Justice, where she litigated education-related discrimination cases and “filed the department’s first peer-on-peer student racial harassment lawsuit,” NAPAWF said.
