Motoko is back!

Love the make up

Hi Motoko,

Love the make up you did for Margaret Cho! She sure looks very sultry here. I hope you are still doing your Q&A because I wanted to ask you a sultry make up question! I’m pretty good at doing natural make up, but it’s the night look that I have more trouble with. I want to go for a more heavy, sexy look but can never quite manage it. My friends just go more heavy on the eyeliner but I have a problem where my eye seems to “eat” the eyeliner (i.e. it disappears…) or perhaps I’m just just not drawing it in thickly enough. I would also like smoky eyes… I don’t really know how to accomplish this or which products to use. The make up I bought looks perfect in the container, but the color doesn’t really show up on my eye. I am Asian but I have double fold eyelids. Thanks!

Hi Tianne,
I am sorry, but I did not apply the make-up on Margaret Cho. I never worked with her before, but in the January issue I gave the readers hints on how to achieve the look of Margaret Cho! I disappointed you, didn’t I?! sooorry…

I think that maybe your type of skin absorbs the make-up faster than most people. I have some experience working with models and actresses having the same skin type. I recommend that you use liquid eyeliner (I would like to give the product’s name I am using now, but unfortunately, it is only available in Japan. Just in case, the name of the company is SANA [www.sana.jp] and it is “MAIKOHAN-NO-EYELINER, Black” ) after using black pencil (“Engraved” from MAC cosmetic). Liquid eyeliner tends to stay longer than pencil.

You can try liquid liner from Maybelline or L’oreal. Also, check out Giorgio Armani, Maestro Liquid Eyeliner.

If you want to have smoky eyes, use dark colors (mixed with black & dark blown, dark green, dark grey and etc.) and apply a little amount of translucent loose powder on your eyelid before and after the applications of eye shadow as it lasts longer.

The key point of eyeliner for Asians is to draw liner along the eye-lashes.

And, your eyes have double fold eyelids, so please apply the shadow of the darkest color along the eyelash lines to the double fold lines, but toward the line with less colors, and make the color fade away (make sure to blend well) around the outer line of the eyelid.

I hope you can create sexy eyes for nighttime soon.

Eyeliner

Hi Motoko,
Hi. I’ve seen the make-up you’ve done for Zhang Ziyi. She looks fresh and natural and her eyes don’t seem to look like they have eyeliner on. How do I achieve that kind of look? I always seem to look different when eyeliner is applied on me. Hope you can help me out. Thanks.
Kay

Hi Kay,
Yes, Ziyi has eyeliner on her eyes!

The key point of eyeliner for Asians is to draw liner along the eye-lashes. It means you fill in black or dark brown color by pencil or liquid in the line between lashes.

You apply the line with dotting motions. This makes your eyes look like they are full of lashes and more open. Also, you can draw a line inside of lashes (this is called inner-line).

When you open your eyes, you can see the white part between lashes and eyes, then fill it in by pencil if you like.

Please remember that it’s better to always clean your pencil.

Natural Look

Hey Motoko!

I would like to learn how to make my face look very natural and fresh, with the whole pouty baby pink or pale pink lips looks that are hitting the runways recently. The look is just so pretty and delicate. If you were able to teach me and tell me brands of lipstick/gloss that is able to achieve the baby pink lips or pale pink lips look, that’d be amazing 😀 Here is a picture of what I’m referring to.

Oh and my lip type is very natural but red most of the time. I hope you can teach me how to achieve that lip look! Thanks
Bonnie

Hi Bonnie
I like baby pink lipstick and gloss, too. Well, as you see from the pictures you referred to me, all eyes have a little bit of accent rather than naked eyes.

Usually, those baby pink or pale pink colors on the lips will turn your face unhealthy looking if you don’t put any make-up on your eyes or blush on the cheeks. I haven’t seen your face, so it is hard for me to tell whether your eyes will be enough with only mascara & eyeliner. (This could be OK for a natural look — even no eyeliner may be fine.)

I would say, that in the daytime, just put light make-up on your eyes, and when you go out for special occasions, make your eyes stronger like a photo from the website of elle. Apply eyeliner on the top and fill inner-line on your bottom eyes with black pencil (or liquid eyeliner, or both — on bottom it’s better to use a pencil) and lots of mascara.

And, you seem to have red tone in your lips naturally, so please erase your natural color by concealer or foundation lightly with a sponge or a brush before applying your baby pink lipstick. Then add lip gloss.

Here is the list of baby pink & pale pink lipstick & gloss (some are pink-coral but pale):
MAC LIPSTICK: Snob, Hue, Plink, Utter Pervette, or Pretty please (Also, Angel might be cute)
MAC TINTED LIPGLOSS: Oystergirl, Underage, Nymphette, Prrr, Florabundance
CHANEL GLOSSMER: Seashell,
MAYBELLINE Shine Seduction Glossy: #610
GIORGIO ARMANI GLOSS: #15 (You can find out many pale color from this brand.)

Please leave your questions for Motoko in the comment section and she will be glad to answer each and every one.
