Hate Crimes Prevention Project Exhibition

The Hate Crimes Prevention Project is a collaboration between the Organization of Chinese Americans, New York Chapter (OCA-NY), the Ana Luisa Garcia Youth Center, Chinatown Youth Initiatives (CYI), South Asian Youth Action! (SAYA!), and the United Puerto Rican Organization of Sunset Park (UPROSE). Student interns from each youth organization participated in a 4-week summer training to learn ways to combat hate crimes. Using art to address how hate crimes can be prevented, the student interns devised the rules and themes for a city-wide art contest open to all high school students to compete. The submissions will be showcased to the public at the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU 41-51 E. 11th Street, 7th Floor Gallery at NYU from August 11-22. The Hate Crimes Prevention Project is an opportunity for youth to use art as an activism tool to prevent hate crimes, as well as a way to promote cross-cultural awareness, open dialogue, and coalition building.
